The Rainbow Book: Rio Piedras
Directed & Produced by majorNmotion
Across the diaspora, many Black LGBTQ individuals experience silencing in their quest to find a community that affirms their intersectional identity. Continuing its mission, NEON traveled to “Loverbar,” a bar and performance venue that serves as a safe space for everyone across the spectrum. Located in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, NEON documents an honest conversation and highlights the voices of the most often forgotten to discuss their experiences.
Inspired by the work of Victor Hugo Green, in “The Rainbow Book” NEON documents the lives of Queer Black individuals living in various cities across the diaspora and where they feel most safe. Historically the Green Book was an annual guidebook for Black vacationers within the US. It was created and published by Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1966, during the era of Jim Crow laws, when open and often legally prescribed discrimination against Black people was at its height in the US. In response to these conditions, Green wrote his guide to share services and places that were relatively friendly to Afro-descendent people, eventually expanding the guide’s coverage from the New York area to much of North America, as well as founding a travel agency.
